There were eleven people in their family. The dad, Peder Mortensen, was crippled, but was still a very good cooper and shoemaker. The mom, Helene Mortensen, who they called Lena, was a talented housewife and a wonderful mother. They also had nine kids. Morten, age 26, was the oldest child and the leader of the family. Ane Kirstine, age 23, they called Stena. Anders was 22 and Hans was 20. Peter had died when he was only 10. Lars was a young boy of 12. The girls, Mette and Mary were 9 and 7, and little Caroline was only 4.
